A good companion quote is Yeat’s familiar “The best lack all conviction, while the worst are filled with passionate intensity” The two quotes, taken together, explain a lot.
That the worst would be filled with passionate intensity isn’t surprising. The fact that the best often lack conviction is harder to understand.
