    But we don’t go there for the coffee…

    The world’s worst kept secret is out–Starbucks coffee is not very good. Just got a link to an article from a friend stating that McDonalds coffee is favored over Starbucks coffee. I don’t care much for the froo-froo drinks at Starbucks, and the coffee is not very good, but I do go there (a lot) for the atmosphere. Starbucks is like a second home to me. Years ago when we moved to LA, I had no place to stay, and Starbucks was my first stop. It’s like an embassy when you’re in another country–I feel safe and cared for.

    McDonald’s coffee might be better, but it’s not the same. So McDonalds, you may win the battle of the coffees, but I’ll pick hanging out at Starbucks any day!

    Despite how fashionable it is to bash Starbucks, I feel much the same way. For the first few weeks after moving to Hong Kong I found a temporary home in one of the local Starbucks, at least until I had my bearings to navigate the other local cafes.

    McDs coffee might be better, but I’m not likley to sit in that sort of place with a chapter to read or a stack of editing to do.

    Starbucks has proven that their goal is not to sell coffee, but to offer an atmosphere, a lifestyle. I think that is in large part the secret of their success. Kind of like how Nike in the 80′s and 90′s didn’t necessarily sell the best shoes, but they sold this idea that wearing their shoes added instant credibility that you’re athletic and beyond convention because folks like Michael Jordan wore the same shoes.

    Your conclusion seems a bit slanted, Eddy. For such a subjective thing as taste it is pretty hard to lay down a precise conclusion. It’s not that Starbucks coffee is “not good” (i.e. bad) but that McDonald’s coffee is better to those expert tasters. ;)

    I saw an interview with a Starbucks executive recently and he confirms that their goal is to create an environment, not just a beverage. By all accounts, they have succeeded.

    Starbucks tea…ouch, that’s stuff I really can’t stomach. Their Tazo tea tastes different than other Tazo teas carried by Seattle’s best and the like. What’s sad is that Starbucks used to have awesome tea about 5 or 8 years ago. I think it was Republic of Tea, but I am not certain about that.
