I guess none of us saw this coming! Recognizing the need to unite the Democratic Party both Obama and Clinton dropped out of the race and endorsed their rival, John McCain. Though McCain is a Republican, both Obama and Clinton thought that everything he stood for was a better alternative than the other’s platform. Neither Clinton nor Obama knew that the other was quitting when they both announced their desire to put the national interest and the interest of the party above their own ambitions.

Both Clinton and Obama acknowledged that McCain’s age, his former POW status, his confession that he doesn’t know much about the economy, and his passion to keep fighting the war in Iraq make him the formidable candidate in this election. In his speech, Obama said, “My friends, John McCain is old. He should get a shot at the presidency. I’m young, and I can run again and again and again.” In her concession speech, Clinton acknowledged that she was probably not going to win the nomination and thanked both Obama and McCain the opportunity to serve further in the senate to gain more experience by 2012, “to show the American people that only I have the skills needed to answer that red phone.”
