We live in a culture where debt has become a part of our conversation and anxiety, which may be the reason why there are many individuals and companies who would like to help you get out of debt. So if you find yourself under a pile of debt, should you turn to such companies?

Here are some of my guidelines:

1. Someone else’s recommendation is always better than a google search. Ask around and see whether someone can recommend a company or a service.
2. Shop around. Like every other business, you may be able to find “better deals” by asking several companies to quote you their services and price.
3. Accountability is much more powerful than an impersonal service. Ask your friends to help you.
